The tradition continued even in the rule of The Peshwas, the Brahmin Marathis, who ruled entire Indian Subcontinent for more than 100 years. Another assessment system, Chess metrics, calculates that his highest rating was 2699, ranked number 7 in the world, in November 1932. He was one of a few players who had a plus record against Capablanca, Frank Marshall & Savielly Tartakower. He was the strongest chessmaster of his time from Asia. After winning the All-India Championship in 1928 (8 wins,1 draw, no loss), he went to England & quickly came to the notice of English masters William Winter & Frederick D Yates who helped him overcome his lack of theoretical knowledge. In an international chess career of less than five years (1929-33), he won the British Championship 3 times in 4 tries (1929, 1932,1933), and had tournament & match results that placed him among the top ten players in the world in his era. He also represented Britain in 3 chess Olympiads as its leading player. He defeated Dr. Savely Tartakovar in a match of 11 games in 1931. He won against Marshall, Capablanca, Salo Flohr & Rubinstein & drew with World Champion Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, Ernst Grünfeld, Gideon Ståhlberg,Isaac Kashdan & Efim Bogolyubov. 5. History of World Chess
Chess had originated in India and from there traveled to China and also through Arab world to Europe. There are historical references that in India chess was used as a tool to teach military strategy to Indian princes. That is probably how chess acquired its nickname: the Royal Game.
The game Chaturanga probably evolved into its current form around 600 AD during the Gupta Empire in India. In the 7th century, it was adopted as Shatranj in Sassanid Persia, which in turn was the form that brought chess to late-medieval Europe. Sanskrit caturaṅga is abahuvrihi compound, meaning "having four limbs or parts" and in epic poetry often means "army". The name itself comes from a battle formation mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata, referring to four divisions of an army, viz. elephants, chariots, cavalry, andinfantry.Chaturanga was played on an 8x8 uncheckered board, called Ashtāpada
From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Russia & Southern Europe from Middle east. In Europe, the game evolved into its current form in the 15th century. The first modern chess tournament was held in London in 1851.
